More About Me

Julie Stevens began performing at age nine when she was cast as one of the orphans in the in the hit Broadway musical, ANNIE. She toured the country in a national tour before joining the Broadway Cast. Julie was in the final cast when ANNIE closed on Broadway after 2,377 performances. Julie went on to earn a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and a Masters Degree in Education from Bank Street College. Julie was able to utilize her acting skills and teaching degree as a teaching artist for many well-known theatre companies in New York. Julie also became an on-set Studio Teacher for professional children working in commercials, studio films, and independent films (www.imdb.com/name/nm0828521/). After moving to Los Angeles, Julie combined her acting and teaching skills, along with an entrepreneurial spirit, to create a motivational deck of cards for performing artists, called ACTING OUTSIDE THE BOX, available online (www.actingoutsidethebox.com) and in specialty stores nationwide. In 2000, Julie launched a website, ANNIEORPHANS.COM (www.annieorphans.com), hoping to re-connect with her fellow cast members online. The website quickly became the premiere ANNIE site for cast members and fans worldwide and was the inspiration for her award-winning documentary film, LIFE AFTER TOMORROW. The film won Best Director and Best Documentary Awards at the 2006 Phoenix Film Festival and was the Official Selection at 9 other prestigious festivals around the country. LIFE AFTER TOMORROW premiered on SHOWTIME in December 2006 and ran for a year. The DVD will be distributed by Arts Alliance America and be available in stores in February 2008. LIFE AFTER TOMORROW was a featured segment on the news show, “20/20,” which can be viewed on the film’s website, www.lifeaftertomorrow.com. Julie was one of 20 filmmakers selected for a new international cultural exchange program, AFI Project: 20/20. The program is a component of the U.S.’s new Global Cultural Initiative that brings together AFI, the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, the U.S. Department of State, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. She recently traveled to Kuwait to screen LIFE AFTER TOMORROW as part of the first American Film Festival. To read her blog and view video from her trip, please visit www.iklipz.com/jstevens. Julie is also featured in an online interview series about independent filmmaking, called BRIDGING THE GAP, on the website, iklipz.com. Sadly, today was our last day in Kuwait. I have had an incredible experience and feel so much more enlightened and educated than when I arrived. It`s really incredible how little most Americans know about Kuwait, myself especially, and how much Kuwaiti`s admire Americans. They feel misrepresented in American films because they are only portrayed as terrorists or buffoons. They are caught in the middle of countries that can`t and don`t get along and are assumed (by most Americans) to be just another Middle Eastern country filled with angry terrorists. They want so much to share their stories and be recognized as a peaceful, friendly country. Unfortunately, they are still bound by censorship and government restrictions, which often prevents them from being able to be as creative and open as they really are.

Another thing that surprised me is how uneasy I used to feel even seeing Arab men on TV wearing their traditional clothing. Most of the time, when we see Arab men on American news shows, it has something to do with terrorist attacts, secret meetings with the President, or something sinister. It`s amazing, when you understand that it`s more of a cultural way of dressing (if their parents wear it, they usually do, too, mostly out of respect), you begin to not even see it anymore. I began to focus more on their friendly faces and smiles, rather than their clothes. Many Kuwaiti`s dress like an average American and their shopping malls are filled with American stores.

This morning, Joe and I went to one more mall, the Marina Mall, which had all of the American stores you could imagine. We ate breakfast at a French bakery/restaurant in the mall and people watched.

Then we were taken to Gulf University of Science and Technology where we spoke to a group of theatre students. They were very interested in the differences between theatre and film, how to produce Independent films, and the role of the director.

After our visit to the school, Joe and I had a goodbye meeting with Ambassador LeBaron to review the week and our impressions of our time in Kuwait.

This evening, we visited the Kuwait Cinema Club, a government run film club. The club has regular meetings and screens films from all over the world. We had an informal chat about films with some of the club`s members. Then we stopped by CineMagic, the private film school run by our new friend, Sheik Nasser, for a final goodbye and to join them for a screening of some Jordanian shorts. It was wonderful to meet more young Kuwaiti`s and it felt like I was hanging out with my friends at home. Sheik Nasser presented us each with a large replica of a Kuwaiti pearl diving boat, which we both loved but wondered how we would get it on the plane to take home. He kindly offered to ship our boats to us, so I can`t wait until it arrives and I can display it in my home. It`s not every day I receive such a generous gift from a member of a Kuwaiti royal family.

So it`s off to the airport and back to the U.S., where I return a changed person. Joe and I have been so moved by the people we`ve met that we are discussing making a documentary together in Kuwait. Amazing, huh?
